Here is where you will find information on all our AI (artificial insemination)Sires, past and present. Their names, ages, history, and qualities. For the 2011-2012 breeding season we used three really excellent farm rams, plus semen imported from Iceland.   The AI sires used this year are GUFFI, KALDI, BLETTUR,KVEIKUR and GRABOTNI.  You can view all of our current sires on our Breeding Rams page.

Alfur -- AI Ram

ALFUR - 03-960

Alfur is a white horned ram with ram scores as follows:

head 8, neck/shoulders 8, chest 8.5, back 8.5, rump 9, leg 17, wool 8.5, feet 8, harmony 8, total 83.5.

His mother scored 6.9 and his daughters' fertility scores are, 3-year olds, 2.5 lambs, 2-year old, 1.58 lambs, yearlings 1.07 lambs.  The BLUP scores for his offspring (out of 100):  muscling, 120, leanness 120, composite meat score 120, daughters fertility 96, milkiness 106.

   

BAMBI

Bambi: Ram #95-829.  Horned, dark moorit.  Good looking head, well muscled neck and shoulders.  Back, loin and thighs score adequate.  Straight feet.  Good  overall conformation and strikingly good temperament.  Thick eye muscle (39mm).  Wool quantity near average.  Tog is a bit coarse, thel is very soft.  Bambi is "near to average in all abilities..."  "Some of his progenies have come out excellently."  This speaks well for him considering the Icelanders emphasize white animals and concentrate their improvement efforts mainly on them.  "Bambi is an AI sire mainly for his color, and should improve breeding of the colored sheep."  Scored 81.5 out of 100.

Results

Bambi was progeny tested at Hóll Farm in Melrakkaslétta in 1998 and result was following; 94 for meat quality, 99 for lambs or total of 96 points (average=100), eye muscle thickness 25,6 mm (H), back fat 3,2 mm, thighs 15,8 points, meat grading 6,65 points and dressing weight 16,12 kg.

   

BLETTUR

BletturBlettur is horned and grey spotted. Vigorous head with especially good horn curving. Very good rib shape, broad and muscular front body. Broad back and broad and very well muscled rump. Superb leg muscling. Very vigorous and beautyful ram.
Wool quantity well above average and even fleece. Curly and medium fine thog. Lustrous and good wool.
Blettur was progeny tested at Ytri-Skogar farm. His progenies have good eye muscle thickness, good meat grading and are overall well muscled with good conformation.
Blettur's daugthers have average prolificacy and milking abilities. Score 2006: 85,5 points Ultrasound 2006: Eye muscle thickness 39 mm, back fat thickness 6,0 mm, muscle shape 5,0. (H)Blettur carries moorit as well as grey and spotted so all colours are possible on Blettur's progenies

   

BRUNI

BruniDescription: Bruni is white, light yellow on head and feet, his horns are coarse. His front body is round and he has excellent back muscling, loin is broad and well muscled. The leg muscle is thick but not deep.      

Production results: Production results: Bruni's lambs were shown i "get of sire" last fall and he got 103.2 in grade. His offspring's strongest points were good back muscles and little fat. For 9 production years of darghters Bruni gets 104 in grade.

   

DROPI -- AI RAM

dropi#91975, born 1991, is also from the Hestur Station. He is white with speckles on the head and is horned. Dropi is described by the South Ram AI station as having a long, strong head with a broad neck well connected to the shoulder. The shoulder is well muscled but rather narrow. He has a broad wide chest, a muscular rack, and his leg is muscular, big and deep. His feet are thick and his gut is big. In summary, he is a powerful ram with excellent leg muscles. His fleece is white, fine and curly with average quantity. There is tan on the back of his head, his tail and up along his back. Dropi carries color.

 

   

Flotti

FLOTTI Flotti: Ram # 98-850. Horned, white.  Eye muscle thickness 40mm (which is outstanding), back fat 4mm.  Southram says of him..."Very good looking  with well curved horns.  The neck is extremely broad and well connected to broad and muscled shoulders.  Great conformation and wide chest.  Excellent back muscling. Great muscling on loins.  Powerful thighs with thick, rounded and deep muscle.  Very strong feet and well placed.  Flotti was champion sire of Rangarvallasysla in 1999. Carries gray pattern, moorit color, and spotting.  Scored 84.5 points out of 100 on graded body parts.
   

GRANI

Grani

Grani is known for excellent carcass scores on his lambs, muscling 121/100, leanness, 115/100, composite score 117, plus his daughters are fertile, and very milky, scoring 109/100!

   

GRIMUR

Grimur

GRIMUR - 01928

Grimur is a horned, white ram born in 2001, is a Tuli son, the source of his wide and beautiful horns, and a grandson of the famous AI sire Garpur, 92-808.  Garpur's genetic effect is so strong that he appears often in the lineage of AI sires coming to the station.  Grimur has an overall score of 83.0, with neck and shoulders scoring 8.5, chest 8.5, back 8.0, rump 9.0, leg 17.5, wool 7.5 and overall harmony 8.0.  Grimur is heterozygous for pattern, carrying gray and spotting.  Grimur is now dead, but there are offspring scores coming in.  His lambs are grading very well, with leg muscling being particularly outstanding, muscling BLUP score of 119/100, leanness, 97, composite 106.  His daughters are scoring 106 for fertility and 101 for milkiness.  His mother was a very prolific milker, and Grimur's fleece has thick thel with little tog.  Grimur will bring muscling, excellent horn set, color, fleece and milk to your flock

   

HUNN -- AI RAM

HunnHunn is horned with coarse shoulders, wide chest and good conformation, back and loins are muscular, thighs well muscled. feet are strong. Hnn is long bodied and vigorous.
Wool

Lot of tan fibers all over the fleece but no black fibers were found. Wool quantity above average, lot of thel but coarse thog.

Results

Hunn was progeny tested at Hestur Experimental Farm in 1993. Result was following: thighs 3,79 points (scale 1-5), conformation 3,8 points, eye muscle area 15,38 cm2, rib fat 6,92 mm, dressing weight 16,2 kg which was 0,1 kg above average. 37,5% graded as prime.

   

HYLUR

HylurWhite, horned. Beautiful head and very well curved horns. Round and muscular shoulders, broad chest and good conformation. Strong back and extremely muscular. Very well muscled loins and rump. Great and muscularly round shaped gigots. Feet straight and well placed. Hylur is long bodied, vigorous and very muscular ram. Wool White with no tan or black fibers. Wool quantity above average, fine thog and even. A bit short woolled on back. Results Hylur was progeny tested at Hestur Experimental farm in 2002. His progenies were extremely lean and muscular. In 2003 it was confirmed in lamb evaluation that Hylur carries on great meat qualities and good carcass grading. Hylur is without any doubt an excellent breeding ram and carries on the same meat qualities as his father, ll 00-868.

Color Inheritiance Hylur is homozygous white.

   

KALDI

KaldiWhite, horned, rather longheaded. A bit coarse shoulders and good rib shape. Broad and strong back with good muscling. Very broad and muscular rump and thick and well muscled legs. Strong feet’s. Very long bodied ram.
Light tan on head and feet’s. Tan fibers on back and loins. Medium wool quantity, rather much thel and long, medium coarse and curly thog.
Kaldi has performed very well so far, carrying on very good meat qualities. His father was one of the best rams in Iceland according to his BLUP-indexes. Kaldi especially carries on leanness.
His daughter are very prolific but Kaldi carries the Thoka gene which he has inherited from his mmf.  They have average milking abilities.

Colour inheritance: Kaldi is heterozygous white carrying moorit and spotted. Therefore you can expect all colors on Kaldi’s progenies.

Score 2003: 85,5 points

KANI

Kani
Kani: Ram # 98-864.  Moorit mouflon, horned.  Kani has a powerful head with good horn curving.  Wide chest and good conformation.  Broad back, 39mm eye muscle thickness (outstanding).  Above average leg muscling.  Wool is starting to lighten with grey.  Medium thog, good thel-fine and soft.  Kani's prolificacy score (a measure of how many lambs his  daughters produce) is an incredible +41.  The usual score is -2 to +10, & his daughters have been above average milkers.
KANI
   

KUNNINGI

Kunningi

White, horned with broad, vigorous and good looking head. Short and broad neck well connected to muscular shoulders. Extremely good back muscling and superb loins. Broad and muscled rump. Superbly shaped and muscled gigots. Great overall conformation and average bodylength. Wool: Light tan fibers on feets and head and a little bit on the rump. Quantity more than average, fine thel and rather short thog. No black fibers. Results:  Kunningi was progeny tested in 2003 along with 7 other rams at Ytri-Skgar farm. Kunningi came out in 1st place scoring 142. His progenies have great conformation and superb gigots. Average dressing weight was 15,2 kg and average carcass grading was 9,6 for meat qualities. LAEKUR

Laekur is white with fine horns and a great conformation.  His wool has a bit of tan, is of medium quantity, and is described as "rather fine"*.  His back and loins are muscled, his leg is excellent, and his feet are correct.  He is described overall as a "vigorous and dashing sheep". His offspring grade very well and Laekur is on the top ten list in Iceland for meat classification. Progeny testing results are quite good for Laekur, specifically, (average scores) neck and shoulders 8.1, chest 8.5, back 8.4, rump 8.6, leg 17.2, wool 7.7 and overall harmony score of 8.1.  Laekur's BLUP leaness score is average at 100, muscling scores 117, composite is 107 and his effect is said to be very strong through the generations. Laekur's dam is a daughter of Thettir who is widely described as an excellent sire of daughters.Laekur

   

LODI -- AI RAM

LODI - 00-871

Lodi is a horned white ram born 2000.  He is a grandson of the AI sire Sekkur, 97-836 and is homozygous for white pattern.  His overall conformation score is excellent at 85.0 with neck/shoulders of 9.0, chest 8.5, back 9.5, rump 9.0, leg 17.5, wool 7.5, and overall harmony of 8.0.  It is very unusual to see an AI sire with such high neck and shoulders scores, plus that amazing back score of 9.5!   PLUS he has a wonderful BLUP score on leanness at 128, muscling 117, with a composite meat score of 121/100 - excellent!    The general report coming in to Southram is that Lodi is an excellent father of daughters.   His BLUP for daughters is 107 for milkiness and 104 for fertility.    Lodi has some of the highest progeny test results, particularly in total score, rump, leg, and neck and shoulders.  If you want to put some build on your lambs, and would like to add outstanding daughters to your ewe flock, then Lodi will be an excellent choice.

 

   

MOLUR

MolurMölur has fine horns and vigorous head, muscular shoulders and good conformation. Back and loins are very muscular as the thighs also are. feet are right and particularly well placed.
Wool

Good wool quantity and appearance  but with tan fibers all over the fleece. No black fibers were found. Much of rather coarse thog.

Results

Mölur was progeny tested at Hestur Experimental Farm in 1996 and result was following:  He was evaluated in 1996 and garnered a point score of 82.5 points. His eye muscles thickness was measured in 1996 at 29 mm, and the back fat at 3 mm. Good carcass results. Leanness BLUP comes in at 102, muscling 102 so the carcass composite is also 102

Color:  White, carrying moorit and solid pattern.

   

MORRO

MorroMorró is moorit with fine horns. Born 1998.  The head is powerful, neck and shoulders well muscled and conformation average. Back muscling quite good, loins long and muscled but not broad.  Thigh muscle well shaped but not deep. Morró is a well built moorit sheep.  Medium quantity of moorit wool; the tog has a greyish tint.  Morro carries spotting, as well. 

   

MULI

MuliWhite and horned. Good looking head and good horn shape. Musculuar shoulders and good conformation. Strong and muscular back. Rump muscling very good as well as gigot muscling. Feets well placed and straight. Vigorous and fine looking ram.
Wool

White with no tan or black fibers. Very fine, curled and soft thog. Wool quantity well above average. Very soft and lustrous fleece.

Results

Muli has no progeny records so far and is bought as AI sire for improvement of wool qualities. As such he is promising bearing in mind his pedigree and wool.  Munkurs mother is a reliable twinner and has 5,5 for milking abilities.

NOI

Description: Pure White - wide hornset and handsome head neck thin, shoulders not bad, rib springy, loin long, not too musclular loin, legs not muscular, wool pure white very fine curley , feet slim close together, long body, excellent wool selected for this - 1st class. Throws coarse lambs - except wool. Used on stocky ewes.

   

RAFTUR

RafturRaftur is horned and homozygous white. Vigorous head with good horn curving. Thick and well muscled neck and shoulders, good rib shape. Superb back muscling and excellent rump and leg muscling. Very vigorous and muscled ram.
Tan on head and tan fibers in the fleece. Rather fine thog and wool quantity little below average.

Raftur was progeny tested at Hestur exp. farm. His progenies are exceptionally lean with great muscle thickness resulting in excellent meat grading. Raftur combines the qualities of his ancestors, Lodi 00-871 and Gari 02-904, with tremendous results. Raftur is most likely the best Icelandic breeding ram so far.
Raftur's daughters are very prolific with good milking abilities.

REkTOR

RectorBlack spotted, horned with a white crown. Well curved and shaped horns. Shoulders a bit coarse but well muscled. Braod chest and great conformation. Very good back muscling with broad and muscular loins. Gigot muscling well above average. Feets well placed and strong. Longbodied and strongly looking ram. Wool: Black spotted. Thick fleece, lots of thel and fine thog. Shortwoolled on back. Results: Rektor was bought for AI to improve colored sheep. He was first noticed in 2001 having the second thickest eye muscle in South Iceland that year (42 mm). Rektor is a solid black, spotted, horned ram, born 2000.  He is the grandson of AI sire Moli, 93-986.  His overall score is 83.0 which is quite good for a colored ram as they will never score higher than a 7.0 on their wool.  Rektor has scores of 7.5 for neck and shoulders, 8.5 for chest, 9.5!!!  for back, 9.0 for rump, 17.0 leg, wool 7.0, and overall harmony 8.5.  The carcass BLUP scores:  muscling 104, leanness 97, for a composite meat score of 100 exactly.  In 2003 seventy four of his progenies were evaluated showing good eye mucle depth and shape along with good gigot muscling. Rektor is well bred ram with AI sires widely scattered in his pedigree. Color Inheritiance:  Rektor carries spotted, not moorit.

   

SERKUR

SerkurSerkur is horned, black spotted. Shoulders are rather high and coarse, chest broad and conformation very good. Back and loins are muscular, thighs thick and well shaped. Serkur is very dashing ram and woollish.

Results

Serkur was progeny tested in 1998 and his progenies proved to be lean but coarse.  His 1996 point evaluation came to a total of 79.5 points, and his eye muscle thickness was measured at 30mm, and his back fat at 7 mm.  Progeny tested in 1998, and his lambs were described as lean. Serkur's shoulders are rather high, his chest is broad and his conformation is very good. Back and loins are muscular, and his legs thick and well shaped. Serkur is of a good family and will without any doubt bring progress into colored sheep.

Color:  Black, spotted, carrying moorit.

   

SPONN

SponnSpónn is white and horned. Head is powerful, neck is short and broad. Spónn has broad shoulders. Muscling is great and conformation extreme. Backmuscling great and loins muscled but not long. Gigots are muscled with thick and deep muscle. Feets are well placed. Spónn is very shortlegged and shortbodied with great overall muscling.

Wool:  Light tan on head and feets and tan fibers back on loins but not elsewhere in the fleece. Two black spots on the back. Wool quantity above average and medium fine thog and adequately even except a bit short on back.

Results:  Spónn was 3rd champion sire of Rangárvallasýsla in 1999. He was progeny tested at Ytri-Skógar farm scoring 115 points for meat qualities, 120 points for lambs and 120 points in total score:

Color Inheritiance:  Sponn is homozygous white.

   

UDI

Udi is horned and homozygous white and is considered a very promising sire!  His overall score is a very rare 86.5, with scores of neck/shoulders 8.0, chest 9.0, back 9.5, rump 9.0, leg 18.5, wool 8.0, and overall harmony 8.0, plus he has a very high daughter score at +34.  He is the grandson of the influential AI sire Laekur, 97-843.    As of the 2005 slaughter season, Udi's lambs had scores of chest 8.3, back 8.2, rump 8.5, leg 17.1, wool 7.8, and overall scores of 81.9.  The BLUP scores were listed as leanness 107, muscling 122 and composite 113.  He died in the 2005-2006 season. 

   

VISIR

VisirVISIR.  White with rather coarse horns. Short and broad neck, good conformation and muscular shoulders. Extraordinary back muscling and superb loins, broad and muscled but not long. Extremely thick and well shaped gigots. Feets well placed and straight. Body lenght below average but conformation and muscling exceptionally good. Wool:  Light tan fibers on feets and head and a little bit at the rear. Quantity more than average. Even and curled thog. No black fibers. Results:  Vsir was progeny tested in 2002 along with 6 other rams at Ytri-Skgar farm. Vsir came out in 1st place scoring 118. His progenies have great conformation, thick eye muscle and superb gigots. Average dressing weight was 16,1 kg and average carcass grading was 9,3 for meat qualities and 8 for leaness.

Color Inheritiance:  Visir is homozygous white.
